The Curious Case of the Unbuckling Belt

12/20/10

Being the shopaholic that I am, I love shopping for those moments when something “special” is required. Be it a party, a trip, or any other fun occasion. Some people take photos for keepsakes, others {or just me} collect clothes. Is it strange that I can associate specific events with exactly what I wore? Or that I’m hesitant to re-wear these pieces for the next special event? I need something new! Something better, right? I’m starting to realize this train of thought is silly {ridiculous actually}. Why buy clothes to wear once and then proceed hang up as if they’re trophies?

I’m bound and determined to start re-wearing and styling these pieces, this dress is my first attempt. I wore this dress originally {and by originally, I mean the only time} on a trip in May and I suppose as the months passed, I forgot the belt on this dress was broken. Well, maybe not broken, but definitely defective. Defective in that it will suddenly unclasp at any given moment. I didn’t mind it so much when it unbuckled when I was driving to work, but boy did it start getting really annoying as the day went on.

Like when I was walking down the hall waving to a co-worker.
Or as I was walking out of Starbucks with 2 coffees in my hand.
Or best of all when I walked into my boss’s office to answer a question.

I mean how to do you re-buckle your belt without looking like a total spaz? If you have the answer, please let me know. In the mean time, I will remember to change the belt the next time I wear this dress.

And in case you were wondering, I walked straight out of my boss's office when it snapped open. Spaz. Total Spaz.

  2. I am the same way about 'trophy'outfits! I had never thought of it in that way, though!

As for the belt I would toss it and get a new one, but that is the shop a holic in me ;)

  3. AHHHH!!! I have a belt that does that too and it is so ANNOYING! There is no casual way to redo it! You look like your zipping your pants or something, it's awful.

  4. I am the exact same way about "trophy" outfits. That's why I started renting my dresses - cheap and I get something new everytime. However it's probably be even cheaper if I just rewore what I already had...

And those stories about your belt made me laugh...too funny!

  5. This dress is amazing on you! Stupid belt. Defective items are one of the few things I'm really good at getting rid of in my closet. Otherwise I have dresses that have been worn twice in five years, but because they're associated with that one event they just continue to linger...

  6. OK LOL at your belt-opening fiascoes. Sorry to laugh at your awkward moments but it was just too hilarious to read. And I have no advice for you except to hug your own waist until you can gracefully exit to fix it!

I really love the color of that cardigan with the grey dress, though! You look beautiful even if the belt was trouble :)

  7. Haha, that is funny but I swear something like that has happened to me and it's only funny after the fact! I shop like you and I love LOFT as much as you do so buying something for each event we have to go to gets pretty expensive. Good luck because I still have not tamed my addiction....

  9. Ohhhh man -- love the dress, but that sucks that it's defective. Anyway to fix it? Glue? Maybe some safety pins (so that even if it pops open... it's not popping off)?

... I wish I could relate to the trophy outfits, but my problem tends to be that I don't have very much in my closet. I really try to rework a lot of my clothes (but then... I still have fun dress-up parties that use my almost-trophy outfits).

And that fushia is a fabulous color on you!

  14. Haha. Thanks for not being too proud to share that with us...too funny.
I love that you have memories with your clothes, but I am happy that you are learning to wear your clothes in new ways - you can have multiple memories of every dress now!

  15. I am absolutely the worst at buying dresses, wearing them once for a special occasion, and then never wearing them again. Several of them are Anthro dresses at that, way to expensive to be a one time thing. You have inspired me to start put them into regular rotation.

Oh that dress is gorgeous on you! I love it with the pink cardigan and wide belt. Such a shame that it's a tricky belt - that can be all sorts of awkward.

  17. It is an expensive habit! I'm trying my best to keep under control.

  18. Oh no, zipper problems are the worst! At least this dress is a faux wrap, so when the belt unbuckled thankfully the dressed stayed closed.

  19. A different belt should do the trick. Thankfully it's detachable and I can just throw on any other belt in my closet. Of course I wish I knew that before I wore it. At least now I will never forget to change the belt.

  20. Thanks Linda! You have to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes, right? And what's better to blog about than something funny/self deprecating?

  22. I looooooooove this outfit. The pink and gray is a great combo. Its too bad the belt is defective because it looks nice.

  23. I, too, associate clothing with events. I can remember what I wore to every occasion that was special since I was 5 years old... you are not alone! Now I am trying the 30for30 Challenge to help with my overflowing closet. Anyone is welcome to join!
